Updating Finally!

Sorry I haven't posted in a long time! I've been busy with dancing. I'm taking five dance classes a week now, and I have two parts in Dance Kids' production of The Nutcracker (baby ballerina doll lead and junior Chinese).
So, here's what I read in the final week of the Summer Reading Program:
The Essential Calvin And Hobbes by Bill Watterson
Cardcaptor Sakura, Master Of The Clow Vol. 1
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows by J. K. Rowling
Sir Thursday by Garth Nix
Inuyasha Vol. 12
Crescent Moon Vol. 1

We get to choose a free paperback book, so I chose Capt. Hook by J. V. Hart. Sadly, it's sitting on my bookshelf getting dusty. I'll have to continue reading it once I finish my current stack of library books.
Here's what I've read so far since the end of Summer Reading:

1. Saffy's Angel by Hilary McKay
2. Ranma 1/2 Vol. 1
3. Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit
4. Crescent Moon Vol. 2
5. Crescent Moon Vol. 3
6. Ranma 1/2 Vol. 10
7. Ranma 1/2 Vol. 11
8. Under The Mermaid Angel by Martha Moore
9. Mary Jane by Judith O'Brien
10. Stink And The World's Worst Super Stinky Sneakers by Megan McDonald
11. Holes by Louis Sachar
(I'm not sure if I already added this somewhere, but I've been a bit lazy about writing down my books)
12. Searching For Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede

I'll have more read soon! I've finally gotten back into reading more; for a while I was staying up late watching Cardcaptor Sakura episodes on YouTube. Hopefully I'm over that phase!

Book Review: Hilary McKay

Recently I read two of Hilary McKay's books, Indigo's Star and Permanent Rose. I liked them very much, so I decided to review them.

Indigo's Star

In Indigo's Star, thirteen-year-old Indigo Casson has trouble with a bully gang in school. Then he meets Tom Levin, who stands up with him against the bullies. Indigo has a large family: Permanent Rose, his eight-year-old sister, who decides Tom is a wonderful person even when Indigo doubts him; his older sister Saffron, or Saffy, who is adopted; eighteen-year-old Caddy, trying out boyfriends but knows the one for her is Darling Michael, the driving instructor; Eve, their mother, who is an artist and paints pictures of peoples dead pets; Bill, their father, also an artist, living in London and doesn't come home much; and Sarah, Saffy's handicapped best friend, who is like one of the family. This book has good humour, witty characters, and a good plot. It's on my favourite books list.

Permanent Rose

Rose, Indigo and the others are back once more. Now, Tom has gone back home to America for the summer, and hasn't contacted them at all. Rose is worried that Tom has forgotten about them, and they have no address or phone number to check on him with. Caddy is beginning to feel doubtful about Michael. Indigo reads a book about King Arthur and Sir Lancelot and the knights of the Round Table, and tries to get Rose interested in it. David, a former gang member, becomes friends with Indigo. Rose detests him at first. Saffron wants to find out who her real father is; she already knows her mother, Linda, was Eve's twin sister. Eve herself is feeling a little down because of Bill, who is still in London. Permanent Rose is even better than Indigo's Star, showing a different side to Rose, all it's characters with still more humour, a few surprises here and there, and yet another wonderful story to tell. I love this book as well.

I still have to read Saffy's Angel, the prequel to Indigo's Star, and Caddy Ever After, sequel to Permanent Rose. Currently I'm reading The Exiles, another one of McKay's books, in which four sisters are sent to their grandmother's house for the summer.
Hilary McKay is one of my favorite authors, and I hope those of you who haven't read her books will try them out!

Recital 2007

Well, it's finally come and gone. On the 16th of June, I had my dance recital.
The show was at the World Theater in Fort Ord, on the CSUMB campus. My first rehearsal early in the day was at 10:55 AM, so I got up at 7:00. We ended up rushing to get the makeup on anyway. We were a little early, though. The first rehearsal, a ballet dance, went well. Then I waited in the lobby till 12:15 for my next rehearsal, also a ballet. I had a quick change, with only one dance in between the the ballet and my jazz class. For the rehearsal I didn't change, because we had to be ready and waiting by the stage while the dance before us practised. Kind of odd dancing jazz in a flowing blue dress!
After the jazz class we left the theater and went to Burger King. I've had a tradition now for a couple years of having a picture of me sitting in the car eating a french fry in my ballet dress. We actually missed taking that this year, but got one of me reading Peter Pan In Scarlet by Geraldine McCaughrean instead.
After that we drove around Fort Ord looking at all the creepy deserted houses for a while, till it was time to go back to the theater. After fixing my hair in a bun again, Mom went to get the tickets, and I waited in line for a chilly fifteen minutes to get backstage. I was one of the first in line, though.
All us second-act people were crammed into a dressing room about the size of two and a half walk-in closets, with, unlike the other rooms, no mirrors on the walls, and no television. No, we don't watch Cable TV when we have one; they put the recording of the recital on it for us to watch. We heard the sound and music though. Odd.
So, me and my friends joked about being packed in the room like bricks and fooled around with makeup for the first act. Finally me and my class went out into the hall.
That first dance is called Dance Of The Blessed Spirits, and I think that's the name of the song. It's from Orpheus, I think.
After that I waited around some more, then we crowded into the hallway again.
The second ballet dance is kind of jazzy. It's done to the song Put On A Happy Face, sung by Tony Bennett and James Taylor. The dance was called Cheers.
A parent assistant helped me change into my purple and black outfit. There was another girl in my class who had the same quick change. I admire her, though, and another friend of mine, because before Cheers they had a Musical Theater dance, and only an announcement from the teacher to change during. Later, when signing the friend's address book, I put "Good job on the quick change!"
The jazz dance was to Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield. We called it Write Your Future.
So, the night went better than I thought it would. My best friend Vera came, along with my dad's friend Karen and her twin daughters. They said I did a really good job, and gave me a thumbs up.
I got two big bouqets, and they're still alive! (=D)
I had a good time, and I'm looking forward to when we get the video, which is eight weeks from now. (>.>)

Deathly Hallows Report

Four months. Everyone excited? Thought so. Coverart's out, for those of you who haven't seen it.
UK Cover

I think the UK cover is a little bright. Please comment and tell me what you think. On the back flap, Nagini can be seen with a bubble-like shape. A few people in my HP group thought it was a pensieve, but I disagree. When I looked at it, the idea of Harry using a Bubblehead charm to get Nagini. Interesting? Let me know. Also, most likely Kreacher on Harry's back.
US Cover

This is the front of the US cover. I like this one a lot better. I noticed Harry has something pouch-like around his neck... My first thought was the mirror that Serious gave him, but that was shattered. It's too small to contain the horcruxes. Wonderful Colosseum background.
Full US Cover

Full cover. Apparently Harry might not use his wand when, if he does, destroy Voldemort. Well, enjoy the covers!

Cliff

This is a short story I wrote after going on an outing on high terrain. Hope everyone likes it!

Cliff
My name is Harriet Calber. I don't like heights. Especially not mountains. I'm on a "family outing." Mom and Dad say they're good for me, but I disagree. I'm that quiet type who, while everyone splashes in the pool, I sit in a corner reading my book. At the moment I'm looking out the window at that looming mountain, not too big, but big enough. Dad turns onto the side road that leads to it. No way out now. What am I going to do? Well, I tie up my messy black hair, pick up my book, and pry my eyes from the rising slope.

"Harriet, look at that marvelous view! Isn't it wonderful?"
I looked up at Mom. "Is it really?" I grumbled, and looked out despite myself. Stomach drop time. The whole countryside was spread out like a patchwork quilt, the kind a pioneer would use. The cliff edge was just a little ways away from the tire, with rocks spread down the side. Shivering, I turned away as the mental images of tumbling cars came in. "What's so great about it?" I muttered.
"You can see everything. That's what's so great." Mom turned back to her view from the front seat. I'm amazed that my parents don't so much as think about the fact that we could slip over that rocky edge any second.
"Ah, here we are!" Dad turned sharply onto a road that led into the trees. "Da-ad!" I yelped, clinging to my seat.
"Sorry, sorry!" He cried, driving slowly.
He parked the car by a clearing with a few picnic tables. Mom had made a lunch with chicken salad sandwiches, deviled eggs, and muffins. We ate slowly, Mum and Dad chatting about the scenery and wildlife. I stayed quiet, just eating. Like I said, I'm not the talkative type.

"So, what do you say we check out that road over there? Looks fun." Dad was grinning. We had our late lunch and it was nearly sunset. I looked at the road. It was rocky and looked like people didn't use it often; not my definition of "fun." The trees grew closely and I didn't think our minivan would even fit.
"You're kidding, right?"
"Of course I'm not!"
"Seriously?"
"Yeah! C'mon!"
Dad tugged me over to the car. I squirmed in his grip, but my dad is a strong guy. He shoved me playfully into the back seat and went around to the front. Mom was in adventure mood; she hopped in the car and smiled expectantly at the road. Great. Just great.
The engine started up. Slowly. Is it as afraid as I am? Dad pulled onto the track and started driving, a little too fast for my liking. "Dad. Slow down." I growled. He simply laughed and speeded a little. "What? You afraid of driving like a normal person?"
Yes. My parents are idiots. I accept that.
Suddenly the forest disappeared. A cliff. A cliff! We were heading straight for it. The tires left the ground. Mom screamed. Dad swore. I didn't do anything. Just looked at the ground beneath me. As it disappeared, became air.
I muttered, "Crud," before the minivan hit the rocks, and the world disappeared forever.

Sad, I know. Just felt like writing something like that. Please comment!

Introduction

Hi, I'm Amelia, I'm twelve years old, and I plan to be a writer. I also take dance classes, I just got into demi-pointe at my local ballet academy. I'll post more later, and soon I'll have some samples from books I'm writing! Hope you enjoy my blog.
